![]() Literally couldn't put the book down until I was on the last page.ģ.5 stars. ![]() I didn't expect it which I appreciate but I also wasn't a huge fan of that when it happened.īut overall a very well written book that sucked me into its world really fast and really deeply. The only reason I'm only giving 4 starts instead of 5 is that I wasn't huge fan of one of the plot twists, that just wasn't for me. So thank you, now I have another imaginary boyfriend, Pierce, in my head, along Hardin, Aiden and few others XD ![]() I honestly fell in love with Pierce and Scar, they are too sweet! This book had its adrenaline filled moments that made me be at the edge of my seat but also moments that made me go "aaww" and I kept waiting my Pierce to show up as I was reading (never happened tho). ![]() Also the plot wasn't predictable for me, which I always appreciate and it caught me off guard multiple times. Not sure if any of this is a spoiler, but I still decided to add the spoiler warning.ĭidn't think I'd like this genre but I ended up loving this book! I was flying through the pages and there didn't seem to be a boring part in this. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If you are unfamiliar with Lupin, imagine Cary Grant in “To Catch a Thief” or George Clooney in the “Oceans” movies. Let’s consider the work of the gentleman burglar. In short, writing a layered novel requires the bold creativity of the cat burglar and the analytical sensibilities of the consulting detective. Nonetheless, I came to regard the process of its writing as an interaction between my initial, “ingeniously laid plot”-akin to that of a master burglar-and the subsequent consulting detective work necessary to discern and then further utilize the unconscious subtleties embedded in that original plan. The product of more drafts than I care to count, Hammett Unwritten owes little stylistically to the gas-lit work of either Leblanc or Conan Doyle it is more the product of Hammett’s “hardboiled” school with a playful, modern sensibility. ![]() Nonetheless, the notion of the master burglar as heroic protagonist in opposition to the archetypal consulting detective gained new resonance for me upon the completion of my first mystery novel, Hammett Unwritten (pseudonymously credited to Owen Fitzstephen). The Blonde Lady is imaginative and clever, though it is best enjoyed today as an adventure in literary archeology. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The experiences that the various characters faced gave depth to this concept. Because "the Wild" is a sort of fairy tale prison (my interpretation, probably not the best way to describe it), it took a lot to fully develop the concept of a living entity being able to craft stories and capture fairy tale characters. The idea behind Into the Wild was highly original. You could tell that the author spent a lot of time researching to be able to weave the tells seamlessly. I enjoyed recognizing fairy tales in the book (some were lesser known tales). ![]() Into the Wild was the debut novel of Sarah Beth Durst, which is rather surprising because I found it to be absolute perfection. I also looked for Out of the Wild, but I didn't see it. I was thrilled! I snatched Into the Wild up so quickly that people looked at me like I was crazy. Imagine my surprise when I literally walked by it on a shelf at my library (the same library that said they did not have a copy). I have been looking for this book for so long. ![]() ![]() But the cost of using this ability is higher than Jamie can imagine - as he discovers when an NYPD detective draws him into the pursuit of a killer who has threatened to strike from beyond the grave. Born with an unnatural ability, Jamie can see things no one else can. The son of a struggling single mother, Jamie Conklin just wants an ordinary childhood. A rookie newspaperwoman learns the true meaning of mystery when she investigates a 25-year-old unsolved and very strange case involving a dead man found on an island off the coast of Maine. Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work in a fairground and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. In 1971, Stephen began teaching high school English classes. ![]() ![]() It will also feature three exclusive art cards with alternate cover artwork for the three novels. Many of these were later gathered into the Night Shift collection. ![]() This includes The Colorado Kid (2005), Joyland (2013) and Later (2021). Collecting Stephen King's three homages to the classic crime pulp paperbacks, published by Hard Case Crime. ![]() The Complete Hard Case Crime Stephen King Collection, featuring the bestselling titles The Colorado Kid, Joyland, and his newest novel, Later, plus exclusive art cards. ![]() ![]() Regardless of his desire not to have the first two of the trilogy printed in English ever again, this is writing requisite to all Murakami fans. ![]() Murakami’s comedic timing and material remind me of vintage Woody Allen, in a good way. I had the pleasure of reading both of them today. ![]() They are both, however, widely accessible as freely downloadable PDFs. The first two of the trilogy are out of print in English and are dearly priced if you want to get your hands on them. Haruki Murakami‘s A Wild Sheep Chase serves as the culminating 3rd of his Trilogy of the Rat, preceded by Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973. ![]() ![]() ![]() There is plenty of action is it, even if most of it ha a hint of humor to it. It is easy to read, hilarious, the writing is flowing. Three mages and a Margarita is the best laugh out loud, dyanmic and relaxing read you can wish for. Okay, so nothing going to thrump the Steel&Stone series by Annette Marie, but this is probably my second favorit. I recived a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review. It’s 100% fun, sassy, fast-paced urban fantasy. Note: The three mages are definitely sexy, but this series isn’t a reverse harem. So what’s a broke girl to do? Take the job, of course-with a pay raise. Either I’m exactly the kind of takes-no-shit bartender this guild needs, or there’s a good reason no one else wants to work here. And the three cocky guys I drenched with a margarita during my trial? Yeah, they were mages. That’s the definition of fitting in, right? Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. ![]() It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview-to see if I’d mesh with their “special” clientele. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig. Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. ![]() ![]() ![]() I really enjoyed the read, as it’s as pure a ‘film-noir’ hard-boiled detective story as you get - brimmed hats, cigarettes, guns, and even opening with a femme fatale walking into the detective agency as the opening scene. ![]() I had seen the film long ago and I remember enjoying it, but to be honest, I couldn’t remember the plot. Humphrey Bogart played Sam Spade in the most famous adaptation of The Maltese Falcon in 1941. Dashiell Hammett was a major influence on the establishment of ‘hard-boiled’ detective fiction and through film adaptations of his stories – film-noir. It was eventually published as a novel in 1930. ![]() Dashiell Hammett wrote this story originally as a serial in the magazine Black Mask. I found an interesting old hardbound version of this novel at a used bookstore and I couldn’t resist it. Sam Spade doesn’t need to go looking for trouble, trouble finds him. ![]() ![]() ![]() But Exley, whose shiny reputation conceals a dark secret, and Vincennes, who goes showbiz with a vengeance, reflect parts of Ellroy, too. So it is clear that Bud is partly autobiographical. See his memoir My Dark Places for the whole sordid story. Ellroy himself was traumatized as a boy by his party animal mother’s murder. It’s about threetortured souls in the 1950s L.A.P.D.: Ed Exley, the clean cut cop who lives shivering in the shadow of hisdad, a legendary cop in the same department Jack Vincennes, a cop who advises a Police Squad like TV show and busts movie stars for payoffs from sleazy Hush Hush magazine and Bud White,a detective haunted by the sight of his dad murdering his mom. Confidential is film noir crime fiction akin to Chinatown,Hollywood Babylon, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, and Jim Thompson. ![]() ![]() ![]() Miles From Nowhere is an adventure not to be missed!Īlong the way, these near-neophyte cyclists encountered warm-hearted strangers eager to share food and shelter, bicycle-hating drivers who shoved them off the road, various wild animals (including a roof ape and an attack camel), sacred cows, rock-throwing Egyptians, overprotective Thai policeman, motherly New Zealanders, meteorological disasters, bodily indignities, and great personal joys. This is the story of Barbara and Larry Savage's sometimes dangerous, often zany, but ultimately rewarding 23,000 miles global bicycle odyssey, which took them through 25 countries in two years. A well-loved, classic tale of adventure, a book you'll find yourself recommending again and again ![]() |
